Silverton Railroad V3
Building this route was both a rewarding and challenging experience. Using real DEM files and Google overlays, I recreated the terrain as accurately as possible — and found myself tangled in some of the toughest mountain landscapes imaginable. Achieving realistic gradients without exceeding a 1 in 18 incline was no easy task!
The route is incredibly scenic and immersive, representing a huge investment in 3D models purchased from talented artists to authentically reflect the look and feel of the era. Since very little historical data exists about the original Silverton Railroad, I had some creative freedom when designing the track layout — ensuring everything worked well for gameplay while staying true to the spirit of the old line.
The route stretches approximately 45 km from Silverton to Quarry, built in standard gauge so that the beloved Shay locomotives can be used — just as they were on the real route many years ago.
You’ll find three standard scenarios included. The Quarry to Silverton scenario, in particular, will keep you on the edge of your seat as double-headed Shays grind their way up tight curves and steep grades toward Corkscrew. Water supply becomes critical, and reaching the water tower just in time adds to the challenge — especially when trying to haul four loaded hoppers up to Silverton!
This route will truly test your driving skills to the limit. 😊
