Trainz 2022:  TRANZ-FORGE HUDSON NKP L
TRANZ-FORGE HUDSON NKP L
Locomotive Description

  • Nickel Plate L-1a/b Hudson type with eight locomotive variants, five tenders, nine passenger cars and three pre-made consists.

The Story: On February 14th, 1927, a groundbreaking passenger locomotive, the first of many 4-6-4 Hudson type locomotives, departed the American Locomotive Company's (ALCo) Schenectady plant en route to its new home on the New York Central Railroad. This locomotive was NYC No. 5200, and it marked the inception of a new era in high-speed, high-horsepower passenger locomotives in the United States. Simultaneously, within the halls of ALCo's Brooks plant, another set of 4-6-4s was quietly taking shape, destined to become the Nickel Plate Road's (NKP) remarkable new passenger power: the class L-1 Hudson.

Arriving on NKP property in March 1927 were engine numbers 170-173, and although perhaps a bit ostentatious for the NKP’s somewhat ordinary passenger trains, were undeniably impressive and modern machines. The L-1 in its final form was an amalgamation of the NKP’s reliable H-6 Mikado and K-1 Pacific with the latest appliances and large boiler theoretically capable of producing more steam than the locomotives could consume. Every aspect of the engine was tuned for the service envisaged by the NKP. The driver diameter and piston dimensions were proven to be the best combination for the start-stop nature and 60mph speed limit of the NKP’s mainline. Features such as cross compound air compressors, Elesco exhaust steam injectors, and mechanical stokers were chosen for compatibility and operational familiarity with existing NKP locomotives. In 1929, a second set of L-1s was ordered from Lima Locomotive Works as class L-1b (Nos. 174-177), distinct from the ALCo originals (which would become the class L-1a). The Lima engines were nearly identical however they featured a few notable improvements, such as a fully cast engine bed and simplex stokers. The L-1s went on to have an illustrious service career as the premier passenger power for the NKP, entrusted with hauling premier services such as the Nickel Plate Limited, the Blue Arrow, Westerner, the New Yorker, and more. Being quite fleet-footed, these Hudsons could achieve speeds up to 100 mph. In the mid-30s, all L-1s received a second air compressor on the engineer's side, and reinforcing braces were added along the cylinders for the L-1as. After World War II, the L-1as received fully cast frames like their Lima counterparts, and the reinforcing braces were removed. Towards the end of their careers, all members of the class were equipped with smoke deflectors, gyra lights, and flying number boards, giving the engines a deceivingly impressive profile. Following the dieselization of the NKP's passenger services in 1947, the Hudsons were relegated to lesser services and regular freight duties. The L-1s operated until 1957, at which point all members, except for the class leader No. 170, were scrapped. No. 170 was preserved and is now on static display at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri.
